It's A Bug's Life For MEP's (October 2007)
Three Members of the European Parliament (MEP's) from the East of England will be visiting Brampton on Tuesday 30 October to see at first hand the affect the decisions they’re involved with in Europe are making to bugs in British rivers and streams.
They will get to have a go at identifying and counting the bugs in samples of water taken from the stream, which are the living proof of the numbers they only usually get to see in official documents.
The Environment Agency’s Regional Strategy Manager Sarah Fowler said, “Our aim today is to give our MEP's an understanding of the work we are doing on the ground in their constituency to meet the targets for improved water quality here in the East of England.
‘The Water Framework Directive is an important pieces of legislation aimed at improving water quality across the whole of the EU, but we want to show the MEP's what the targets really mean in practical work and what difference it will make to our bugs’ lives.”
As well as being briefed on what the Environment Agency is doing to implement the Water Framework Directive, the MEP's will see a demonstration of electro-fishing at Brampton Brook and then visit an Environment Agency laboratory to take part in water sampling work.
Sarah Fowler continued, “The MEP's visit here today also shows how important the Region’s environment is to them and the level of interest there is in our environmental work.”
Bugs are an excellent indicator of the quality of water in a river or stream, with different species being present depending on the nutrient levels and general health of the water.
The Water Framework Directive is a piece of European legislation which promotes a new approach to water management through river basin planning. It will help the Environment Agency to improve and protect inland and coastal waters; drive wiser, sustainable use of water as a natural resource; and create better habitats for wildlife that lives in and around water.
