Have You Got A Valid Rod Licence? (May 2008)

Is Your Rod Licence Valid?Going to risk fishing without a valid rod licence? Think again – illegal anglers will have nowhere to run and hide over the forthcoming May holiday weekend (24-26 May) as the Environment Agency cracks down on people fishing without a valid rod licence.

The reminder comes after nearly £610,000 was paid in fines and costs by 4,330 illegal anglers during 2007 for fishing without a rod licence. In addition 35 anglers received cautions from the courts, a man from Hastings was banned from fishing for one year and a man from Staines was banned for two and a half years.

Martin Stark, Fisheries Licencing Manager, at the Environment Agency said: “Our staff are better equipped than ever. With access to databases at the switch of a mobile phone enforcement officers can verify address and licence details.

“All this makes catching licence evaders an easier process. Our officers will target rivers, lakes and other waters where we believe cheats will be present. All previous licences expired on 31 March so it is very important all anglers ensure they have a valid licence before heading out to fish.”

Fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish and eels in England and Wales and the Border Esk in Scotland requires a licence from the Environment Agency. Failure to have a licence is an offence. Those caught fishing illegally face tough penalties, including fines of up to £2,500 and a ban from fishing.

“The rod licence fees are essential in improving and maintaining our fisheries, which is why our enforcement officers are out there checking for those who try to cheat the system. Last year, the Environment Agency invested approximately £30 million in improving fish stocks and angling opportunities, with some £20 million of this coming from rod licence fees. The money raised through rod licence sales is invested directly in fisheries work that benefits all anglers,” continued Martin Stark.

One project which has benefited from rod licence money is for the Stoke on Trent Disabled Angling Club at their pool at Consall Country Park. Work has just finished on an Environment Agency funded project to provide 14 special angling platforms and upgrading the paths at the top and bottom end of the pool.

The work, which cost £13,000, now means ten fishing pegs are now suitable for disabled anglers in wheelchairs. Another nine have steps and handrails instead of a slippery bank down to the water making these safe for disabled anglers that do not need wheelchairs. All these pegs may also be used for teaching young anglers the art of fishing.

Midlands’ Fisheries Technical Officer, Mick Buxton, said: “Everyone is extremely pleased with the work, and the anglers can’t  wait to try out the new platforms when the pool opens later next month. The new platforms will make angling available to many more Staffordshire people.”

For 2008/2009 a full season coarse and trout fishing licence costs just £25.00 and a salmon and sea trout licence costs £68.00. There is also a range of concessionary, junior, eight-day and one day licences. In addition, the almost three million people who receive Disability Living Allowance in England and Wales are eligible for a reduced price fishing licence.

Buying a new licence couldn’t be easier – around 15,000 Post Offices and other outlets sell them; a direct debit can be set up, and they can be purchased over the phone on 0870 1662662 or online at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/rodlicence any time, day or night.
